Impact of public debt on economic growth in ASEAN countries

Abstract

The research objective of the article is to study the impact of public debt on economic growth in order to provided more empirical evidence to clarify the importance of expenditure management on government’s public services and goods, the economic community accession’s impact on economic growth in the current context. The study is based on data of ASEAN + 8 countries (except Brunei and Myanmar) with the GLS estimating method over the period of 34 years from 1987 to 2020 to identify the public debt impact on economic growth in Vietnam. The study results showed that economic growth has a negative impact on public debt. Governments should have appropriate public debt policies in place to support economic growth.
