The impact of chief executive officer’s personality on listed firm's Vietnam performance through firm's life-cycle

Abstract

This paper uses data of 327 Vietnam's listed during the period 2012-2018. Additionally, based on the life-cycle classification method of Anthony and Ramesh (1992), the author classified the company's data into groups in the firm's life-cycle stages, including growth stage (476 observations), mature stage (1373 observations), and decline stage (440 observations). The results of this article showed that the chief executive officer’s personality has different and statistically significant impacts on the firm's performance in each stage of the firm's life-cycle. The results of this article in order to support managers, especially the Board of Directors, to have more information about the criteria of the General Director to select suitable managers for each stage of development of the firms to achieve high efficiency in corporate governance, such as research showing that the chairman of the board of directors who does not concurrently hold the position of CEO will bring good efficiency to the firms, which implies that the two this mind needs to choose the right person for the right job. In addition, the factors of education, female gender, and age of the chief executive officer are also factors affecting the firm's performance, so these factors also need to be considered and considered carefully.
